PINK!!!

Toning down the passion of red with the purity of white results in the softer pinks that are associated with romance and the blush of a young woman's cheeks. It's not surprising that when giving or receiving flowers, pink blossoms are a favorite. Pink is the color of happiness and is sometimes seen as lighthearted. For women who are often overworked and overburdened, an attraction to pink may speak of a desire for the more carefree days of childhood.

Pink is a mixture of red and white. Commonly used for Valentine's Day and Easter, pink is sometimes referred to as "the color of love." The use of the word for the color known today as pink was first recorded in the late 17th century.

Long story short...women love pink. They just do! It makes you feel ultra feminine and totally romantic! There's no denying it. Hence my new collection. Visit my shop to take a closer look!

Fashion...A secret in the True Life of Lori Nelson

Okay,

Here's the inside scoop to the real me... For those who actually know me in my day-to-day life, most are actually shocked (I mean jaw dropping shocked) when I show up somewhere in a dress. My "offline" personality is rather, shall we say, laid back. My favorite outfit is a pair of worn soccer shorts and my favorite light weight t-shirt. Throughout ALL seasons of the year I will be wearing flip-flops. You never know when you may need to jump out of the car and start playing soccer at some random soccer field you spot! I don't wear make-up, and I cannot wear jewelry (without major fidgeting). However, and this is a BIG however, I do have a closet fashionista deep inside. I can hardly believe it myself. But some part of me truly wishes that I had a couture wardrobe. After several office/marketing bit jobs galavanting in front of the general public, the constant pant suit started to reallllly get to me. After the lay-offs and my miraculous new at-home career, you will NEVER see me in a pant suit again- hence the shorts and t-shirt. But there are times, very rare, when I like to look my best and get all gussied up and hope that my husband looks at me extra long that night. And I feel great and that's all I need.

So in lieu of this behind the scenes of Lori's inner girly girl, I give you the top 10 countdown of my favorite dress designers on Etsy. (even though there are sooo many more that I haven't even found yet) These women are truly talented. They are from all different genres of all different style types...and apparently I like black and red. I didn't even realize that until I posted them. Hmm. I know it's not my thing but I just had to bring them to your attention. Maybe next time I'll post about shoes! Who knows!

Summer is Here...and I am tired of missing out!

In case you do not know, I live in Atlanta. And as much much as I hate the saying, "Hotlanta", it truly is...sticky, icky, smoldering, miserable HOTlanta. Yes, I was raised here so you would think I would be used to it. I'm not and I don't think that I ever will be. I do like hearing how other people enjoy their trips to the lake and afternoons of basking in the sun. But honestly, I'll never understand it. However, summer can be fun sometimes regardless of the heat. There are some things that just make summer SUMMER- homemade ice cream, my husbands signature burgers, star gazing to the sound of crickets, lightening bugs all around, and the sweet smell of honeysuckle. I AM! I just can't get into the swing of the blog craze. I am trying I promise. All of these thoughts are jumping around my head and I think..."Oooo! I should write that down! No wait! I have to finish beading this. I can type later." And then it NEVER gets done. I will work on this. I am going to get a netbook that I can take with me anywhere and then maybe that way I can wrangle my ideas for you all to read. Aside from my negligence I have BIG news!!!

Shabulous Creations, also known as Shabulous Chandeliers, will be making it's first chandelier debut on HGTV's hit TV show, Dear Genevieve! Genevieve will be re-working a downtown loft apartment in New York City. The episode (Season 5, Episode 506) will air either late September or early October of this year. Tune in to see one of the best Lori originals yet! I will be following up this blog post with a step by step presentation of how I created my masterpiece.

So, don't give up on me yet. I'll be back with some exciting new posts. In the meantime, check out some of my new listings! Lots of changes to the shop!

It's a little late for the completion of my "The Wind Blowing In...Seaside Collection" considering that it is now November! But, hey! It's totally worth it and they all turned out great! My sister's name is Wendi. I named the collection after her. She lives in Panama City, FL and always coins herself in emails as "It's me, just the wind blowing in..." I thought that it was cute and creative so I turned it into a chandelier. I liked the way the first one turned out so I made a few more! I visit my friend in Anna Maria Island, FL and always visit my favorite shop, The Sand Dollar. I am always leaving there with great ideas and motivation! The shop is just so perfectly seaside! Day by Day

Life is sooooooo overwhelming sometimes. It is getting harder and harder to stick to a schedule day to day. So much to do...so much to work on...so much to prepare for...so much to plan... juggling a family, business, moving, and wedding is crazy hard!!! I haven't blogged in FOREVER. I don't really know what to say other than through all of this going on, I have come out strong with my chandeliers. I am producing a good bit and am reaping the benefits! Thanks to all who are reading this and appreciate my work! You have no idea how much work and effort goes into each piece along with the other aspects of life. Maybe after October I can sit back and relax...doubt it but I'll push on. Thanks for the support!

Was it really worth it?

YES!

As an artist and designer it can be a very daunting task to find new and different ways to reach customers. I participated in a local festival this month- the Geranium Festival in McDonough, GA. It was SO MUCH work! I had my friends, family, and even friends of friends involved in pulling it off! (side note: Thanks to all of those included in this diatribe!) Setting up at 12 midnight the night before and staying there until 3am prepping and primping my creations was trying to say the least. The 6am wake up the next morning was worst than the night before. And as the sun rose and its hot heat created a blanket of steam, the flood of people roared through the tent alleys. People came and people went. Women gushed over my girly frocks. Children pulled at the pretty dangling jewels that hung from anything between electric chandeliers to my cheery lime colored table cloths. My business cards seem to be flying away they were snatched up so fast! My feet hurt, my back was burnt from the sun, and my stomach was aching in anger for not eating since the day before. I don't know that I've ever talked so much in one day in my life!

Alas, the day was done. It was time to close up shop and pack away all that was left behind. The entire day was a haze. My brain could barely function and all my body wanted to do was collapse. As my family helped me pack-up I looked around, counted my earnings, and appreciated the fact that it took this ONE day of work to accomplish so much. Not only did I make a profit while at the show, but I somehow managed to get almost 300 business cards out there into the world.

I owe my family and friends so much gratitude for the amount of love, support, and encouragement that they have given me in the last two years trying to build this weird little business of mine into a true career. It is really happening and I could not do it without them.

It was a hard day. And there will be many of those to come. I may not know where to go from here, but I think that I am definitely moving in the right direction. Making a little extra money, getting my name out there, and gaining numerous new contacts and clients was not the only thing I can take away from this day, but I also gained a renewed sense of worth. People love my lamps. I'm obviously doing something right.

So I will press on and continue doing what makes me happy...

I am adding a new installment to my blog periodically. It is called "Playing Dress Up". A lot of times I scan numerous sites for rooms with inspiration for my designs. I like to play on fun elements from all types of settings. From babies' rooms to outdoor patio areas, I can always come up with some kind of design that will shine with perfect harmony. This Christmas is a tough one. It seems like the whole nation is on stand-by. People are making different choices on purchases and others are making deals with merchants like they never have before. It is weird. It is an okay weird. It seems like everyone is doing their part to stay afloat and help others stay afloat as well.

Christmas is only weeks away and I am completely caught off guard! Didn't we just throw a Halloween party? Okay, Christmas...decorations, gifts, family, parades, church, feasts, friends, and Santa Claus. I'm getting there.

Being in a financial jam (like the rest of the nation) is not making it easy to even think about gifts. Usually I make most of my gifts hand-made. And this year is no exception. So, to help myself and possibly you get into the gift giving spirit, here are some hand-made and frankly cheap how-to's.

Patchwork Scarves!
They aren't too thin, but they aren't too thick either. They're mostly just to fashionably wear out and not so much to keep you warm

1. Cut a bunch of fabric scraps and sew them together in a long strip about 60 inches long.

2. Back that with corduroy of the same length and sew them together with right sides facing

3. Leave a 3 inch opening on one of the short ends for turning.

4. After turning them inside out, top stitch all along the edges.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix-N-Jar!

These make the best gifts around the holiday season, especially if you put them in a jar with a handle. The layers of ingredients look so pretty and the mug can be used all year round to drink out of! Decorate the outside with pretty ribbons and a bow and you have a great gift idea!

Estimated Time: 20 mins.

WHAT YOU NEED

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups (9 ounces) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar

HOW TO DO IT

COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Place flour mixture in 1-quart jar. Layer remaining ingredients in order listed above, pressing firmly after each layer. Seal with lid and decorate with fabric and ribbon.

RECIPE TO ATTACH:
PREHEAT oven to 375F. Beat 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) softened butter or margarine, 1 large egg and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until blended. Add cookie mix and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional); mix well, breaking up any clumps. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Felt Sleeping Mask!
Things you need:

Two pieces of felt
An elastic band (found in sewing stores) or a satin ribbon for tying the mask around your head
A small bit of polyfill (found in sewing stores)
Sewing needle and thread
Scissors
a few straight pins

1. Begin with the pattern at http://www.crafts-for-all-seasons.com/support-files/mask.pdf . A new window will open and Adobe Reader will open so you can print the mask pattern. Once you have it, cut it out. Pin this pattern on the two pieces of felt stacked together. Use some pins to secure the pattern. Then carefully cut the two felt pieces out around the paper pattern.

2. Unpin the paper from the two felt pieces. Lie the two sleep mask felt pieces on top of one another (right sides facing out) and pin them together again.

3. Cut the elastic band to a length that fits snugly around an adult's head, or use black satin ribbon, that be tied around the head. Place the end of the band in between the two felt pieces near each end of the mask. Sew this together in place with the needle and thread.

4. Now begin sewing, a basic stitch, all around the edges of the mask. It is OK if the stitches show. If you use a contrasting color thread this will actually look nice. A sewing machine can also be used. Stop sewing by the bottom of the mask between the eyes, and leave an opening.

5. Now add a small amount of fiberfill to the opening. Push the fiberfill back into the mask and spread it with your fingers.

6. Once the fiberfill is added, sew up the opening. The sleep mask is now ready to wear.

My definition of shabulous is exactly that and more! I feel that it can mean taking something ordinary or broken and forgotten and turning it into something fabulous!

Shabulous can be used to describe anything from a car to necklace. There is something truly special about an object that has been transformed. I have heard that indulging in a "blogspot" boosts success in your audience as well as your sales...so here we go!

My name is Lori Nelson and I have always been an "artsy" person. I am the creator of Shabulous Chandeliers/Shabulous Creations. I began an adventure a year or so ago of taking old chandeliers and making them new again. Sometimes I turn them into something all-together different. It's fun, it's different, it's unique. What can I say? I have a hard time being normal. In this blog I will share with you my inspirations, my strengths, my weaknesses, and the people and products that I feel passionate about.

I'm honestly not girlie I swear. I am my fathers daughter, a tomboy raised in the woods, archer, soccer player, and proud mother of my eight year old son whom loves spiders which I think is awesome! However, deep down, I guess I have my girlie side...I can create such beautiful things. I inherited my talent from my grandmother, Bonnie Walden. She was an amazing artist. I feel so blessed that my art in anyway may be compared to hers. Re-designing chandeliers is my outlet- a way of expressing myself and letting go of the world around me.

I don't know why I chose chandeliers. I didn't even really care about them before. But somehow somewhere along the way I discovered that they represent class, style, dignity, distinction, awe, and radiance. Plus, they make a striking statement! A light fixture can strangely reflect one's personality. I strive to dictate a truly unique personality with every piece!

Please, enjoy my work and appreciate my silly opinion on other matters. I'm not all serious and stuffy about art, I'm just having a lot of fun creating it!!! Thanks for your time... now buy something!!!
